Congregation Shir Ami is pleased to announce that Cantor Marie Betcher has accepted our invitation to become our first Spiritual Leader. In her new position, Cantor Betcher will lead High Holiday Services, Shabbat Services, Adult Education and officiate at life cycle observances for our six-year old congregation. In addition, the Cantor will represent Shir Ami as the congregation's clergy in the Austin Jewish and Inter-religious Communities.
Cantor Marie Betcher began teaching at Congregation Shir Ami in the fall of 2004 as one of our Religious School teachers. She became Shir Ami's Religious School Education Director in the spring of 2005. As Education Director, she has standardized and invigorated our curriculum and enhanced our B'nai Mitzvah program which she also teaches.
Cantor Marie Betcher holds her Certification and Investiture from Hebrew Union College in New York. She has her Bachelor and Master degrees in Vocal Performance from Indiana University School of Music and Florida State University, respectively.
She served Temple Beth Israel in Austin, TX from 1988 until 1994. Since that time, Cantor Betcher has served many other Reform and Conservative congregations and Jewish community centers across the country, including the Jacksonville, Florida Jewish Community Center in their Gan Yeladim Early Childhood program as Judaica Specialist for 180 children.
She is Director of The Dell Tones, a choir sponsored by Jewish Family Services at the Dell Campus in Austin. Cantor Betcher has performed in concert at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D. C., and at Piccolo Spoletto in Charleston, South Carolina. She has toured Sicily and England in concert.
She is a member of The American Conference of Cantors, The Guild of Temple Musicians and Austin Jewish Professionals Council. She and her husband, Jonathan, live in Austin with their 23 year old cat, Pooky.www.mariebetcher.com
